From taking part in this mentorship for 8 months, I have gained so much experience. I love that I already have my foot in the door in the medical field and I have a sense of what I plan on doing for a career. Because of this program, I am already one step ahead of every other nursing student that hasn't had an internship. While I wasn't able to do much other than observe, when in the rooms with my mentor I would pay attention to how carefully things are done and how they are worded. Because of this, I will have more understanding of how to be a good nurse.
Interning at Northside Hospital has helped me prepare for my future by helping me to realize that I love critical care along with the fast pace setting of the hospital. I will take this newly found knowledge and jump straight into nursing school with determination instead of reluctance and hesitation because I already know the career that I want. Before the internship, I was in between cardiology and neurology. While I didn't get to work in neuro during these 8 months, I did get to work in cardio and that helped me to realize that it's not for me. So in a way, it has changed the way I view my potential career but it has also secured it. My advice for students who wish to join the Honors Mentorship Program would be to give it your all. I would highly suggest taking this class over another AP course because you will have the experience that could save you a few years in college. If you feel that you will be reluctant to intern because you have "more important" things to do or study for, then go anyway because this experience will better prepare you for life than you imagine in the beginning. Also, if you take the time to get to know your mentors and allow them to get to know you, it will turn out very beneficial for you. I became very close with my last mentor in the hospital rotation and I will continue to keep in touch because I might just contact her in a few years when I need a job.
